    SNES vs Nintendo 64

Which one of these is the better system?!

While I think the SNES had a better variety and a lot more great games over the N64 (Super Metroid, Illusion of Gaia, Super Mario World, etc), I would still have to say my personal favorite is the Nintendo 64. The beginning of the 3D age meant that game designers didn't have any set formulas that they could churn out over and over again as we see on 3D systems nowadays, so everything back then had to be approached differently and require actual thinking on how to make a great game.

The games were expensive as shit at $70 a pop, and I had roughly 35 of them if I remember correctly. So that's over $2000 worth of games for the few years it had before the PS2/GCN/Dreamcast came out.

Seeing Mario's world in 3D was one of the best experiences I remember as a child, and Ocarina of Time is probably the biggest influence on where I am at in my life today. If it wasn't for that game, I might not have pursued web site design/programming that ultimately led to me having a website that would land me a career in IT. The Nintendo 64 mixed with the Gameshark also allowed me to have almost endless fun with my games because of unfinished areas you could explore, like the secret area on the dam level in Goldeneye, and the Nintendo 64 games also seemed to have a lot of glitches that could sometimes lead to fun events. Hell, here is a lot of all the glitches that were published on the site in 2001-ish in Ocarina of Time: (http://www.gamerhandles.com/old/design1/glitches.html).

Really tough choice for me. I have a lot of great memories from both consoles, probably more from the N64 as I spent more time with it. The games you mentioned were obviously great classics, but I also have some great memories with the Banjo series, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, Pokemon Snap, the San Fransisco Rush series, the THQ wrestling games, and Shadows of the Empire. And then there was the less popular games that I had a blast with. I remember playing the ridiculous multiplayer in Winback for hours with my buddy, and all you did was try to shoot these coloured cubes before the other person. Or the bizarre platformer Space Station Silicon Vally. I don't know how many times I rented that game, but I could never beat that damned ice world. Or the Mission: Impossible games! The death sound byte is permanently burned into my brain, because for some reason it sounded like Ethan Hunt was saying "rocksteady" when he died, which made me think of Rocksteady and Be-Bop. So yeah, lots of fond memories.

But I have lots of fond memories with the SNES as well. Obviously all the big titles, but also smaller ones too. I spent countless hours trying to get through King Arthur's World, but those troll dudes always scared the fuck out of me. I played Flashback forever, but to this day I've never seen the ending. Troddlers? Oh god... Troddlers. I rented that game so many times that my parents should have just bought it for me. Sunset Riders? Fuck yeah! My pal owned it and we would play it all the time, even though I was terrible at it.

But which is "better"? I think I'd have to go with the SNES. While the N64 really pioneered 3D gaming, the SNES perfected 2D. And today, I find it much easier to go back and play those 2D classics on the SNES then the early 3D games on the N64.

I think I have fonder childhood memories on the SNES and Zelda:ALttP was a big game that drew me into more "hardcore" gaming, but if I had to choose the "better" system I would say it was N64.

The games are just better, graphically and plot-wise. It was really a break though system and Travis brings up a good point about the glitches. Every game had so many fun glitches to toy around with (Like the "Freeze Navi in the ToT" glitch) and it made the system more than just play a game and be done with it. It was the reason I came here actually. I was searching for glitches for Zelda: OoT and wound up here.

    N64 for sure.
