EDIT: If you really want to know, I'm pretty sure it's a survival technique. I think they will pull the claw off and scurry away, hoping that their predator will grab the claw while they escape.

I spent a whole summer studying crabs.

B. Can they grow a claw back?
 
They sure can, that's why you'll sometimes see crabs (if you ever actually do see crabs) with one real tiny claw. It takes a while, though, since they can only grow when molting.
 
I live 30 minutes from the Jersey shore, and I rarely go to the beach.

Augh..my life sucks.
