Once you walk into the purifier room in the Jefferson Memorial during the last quest you can't go out. You have to stay and beat the main quest. So as long as you have a saved game outside of that room, you can just load it up and go do whatever you want.

Sub Station is the best. Mainly because they're less than five minutes away from me and they can make a pretty godly sub. However, Firehouse is also great.
