Gods of the Arena is a 6-part prequel series set 5 years before the events of Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Episode 1:

The first episode is a little light on the action, and focuses more on introducing the cast. Long time characters Oenomeus(Doctore), Crixus, Ashur, Lucretia, Batiatus, Barka, and Silonius return, accompanied by newer characters such as the current champion of the house, Gannicus(Seen in the above picture). Gannicus is a wild card of a character. Part of what made Spartacus such a great series was how deep the main character Spartacus was. Gannicus is quite the opposite, living for the moment, much to the chagrin of those around him. It'll be interesting to see how the character pans out.

The highlight of the episode was Gannicus kicking another Gladiator's ass blindfolded.

Just finished watching the first episode of Blood and Sand. Interesting concept, I guess. They tried to combine the plot of Gladiator with the style of 300. Problem is they have about 5% each of the Gladiator's acting talent and 300's special effects budget. This is a CHEESEFEST that also features some softcore pornography.

I'll likely finish the season, but I can't imagine this turning into a regular show for me.

It's really a show you have to get into and let develop. The dialogue alone is terrible. I was lucky to make it three episodes into the first season, but the shit ruining in the arenas kept me in it. Then late in the season it was just head slicing the whole way through.

Can't argue with that.

The main beef I have with it is the dialouge. I mean, the writer throws in "cock" in just about every sentence. I mean, you're drunk and you're singing about your junk? That's neither clever nor funny, and after a while all the HEY LOOK, SEX! and COCK! just really get old. Cheesy doesn't even describe it. I think stupid is a better adjective. It's a decent show that's saved by some badass moments in the plot.
