Codemasters have announced the date of 24th May for the 3rd instalment of DiRT. After the distinctive American twang of the last two instalments DiRT 3 is taking a more traditional approach to rally, and it will feature more cars, tracks and events than its predecessors. What's New This Time Around?
Size, focus and depth. Codemasters claims this is the biggest driving game it has ever produced. Dirt 3 will have three times as much rally and twice as much track distance as Dirt 2. And where the previous game cast you as a noob driver in a beat-up RV, this installment is all about going pro. The dingy Winnebago is gone – this is serious business. Here's a closer look at some of what's changed from Dirt 2 to Dirt 3:
59 more tracks
Sharper focus on rally racing (60% of the game)
Improved weather effects (pioneered by F1 2010)
Snow is available as a driving surface
New modes, including gymkhana
Split-screen multiplayer
Quick and easy YouTube uploads
WRC licensed content
Compound, an obstacle-strewn playground
Improved damage modeling that will shred tires
What is Gymkhana?
We could have sworn it was a terrible 1980s movie about karate mixed with gymnastics, but it's actually a score-based ballet of automotive obstacle racing. It's been popularized by rally legend Ken Block, and it's a big part of Dirt 3.
And if like me you don't have a clue what Gymkhana is here's a video below.
